Chapter Eighteen

Salvatore

I paced the hallway of my townhouse as I left Isabella alone to have her shower. I sensed she needed space from me, especially after what I’d said.

Though I hadn’t lied, I knew now I didn’t want to hurt her. She wasn’t just my lover, she’d burrowed her way into my heart, into my very soul, until I wondered if she might have become a part of my DNA.

Hurting her would be akin to hurting myself.

I’d still do it though. I’d have to if it meant sending her family a message, sending her a message and making her realize she was still my captive as much as she was my lover. I held the power, not her. It was past time she realized that.

I took my cellphone out of my pocket and hit speed dial. My papà answered on the second ring.

“You couldn’t have rung sooner, figlio?”

“I’ve been a bit…distracted, though I’m sure by now you know why.”

“I might be getting old but I’m far from senile. I know you have the Agostino puttana.”

I winced at his choice of word. But he didn’t need to know she was as far away from a whore as any woman I’d been with.

“The question is,” my papà continued, “what are you going to do with her?”

“I’ve not yet decided. Her brother hurt Sabrina, and that is unforgiveable.”

“You will soon be don. Whatever you do make it count. You need to strike fear into the hearts of anyone else who dares try and cross us. Make sure her punishment fits the crime of her brother.” His breath crackled into the cell’s microphone. “I don’t need to remind you about your mother’s death.”

My lips pulled back, my vision clouding as my pulse elevated. My temple tightened as a migraine threatened along with a bunch of memories I didn’t want to recall. “No. No you don’t.” I drew in a ragged breath. “Don’t worry, papà, I won’t go easy on her. She’s an Agostino, she’ll get what she deserves.”

I ended the call as a tread sounded behind me. I pivoted to face Isabella. She was wrapped in a towel, her damp hair hanging down her back. Her eyes flashed, her face twisting. “I’m so glad to know what you really think about me. And here I was beginning to trust you. More fool me.”

She spun away and marched back down the corridor into the master suite. I was tempted to chase her down and make her listen to reason, instead I let her go. What could I say anyway? That I hadn’t meant it? That she was safe from me?

Nothing I did or say now would matter, and perhaps that was for the best. It was better that she feared me and looked at me like the bad person I too often had to be.

I pushed a hand through my hair, then headed to the bar in my parlor that also doubled as my office when needed. I poured myself a good splash of whiskey in a crystal glass, then tossed the drink down my throat, enjoying its burn.
